How much longer will this stomach bug last?
Ok, so on Sunday night, I had horrible stomach pains and was up all night with diarrhea. On Monday, I slept most of the day, drank a ton of water, ginger ale, and gatorade, and only ate a few saltines. By Tuesday morning, I was feeling much better, so I ate some toast for breakfast and then had some white rice later in the day. I didn’t feel sick at all that day and I continued to drink a lot. I went to bed feeling fine, but I started having really bad stomach pains and diarrhea again at about 3AM. I was sick again most of the day that day (Wednesday). I was fine yesterday, but now my stomach hurts again today (Friday)! I have no fever, no nausea or vomiting, and really no other symptoms. I had the chills for a little while when I was getting sick every few minutes, but that’s about it. I’ve been drinking A LOT this week and only eating toast, bananas, and saltines. (And not much of those things either.)
Any advice on what I should do or when this will be over would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer by Lynn
There is a horrible stomach virus going around this month! So many of my friends have it, and 2 of them had to go to the ER to get rehydrated. Those bugs used to only last 24 hours, but my friends who have had it had it for about a week. I am so sorry! You are handling it just right with the food and beverages you are having. Get well soon. Being sick on Christmas is no fun.

Gas, stomach ache, nausea… What could it be?

Gas, stomach ache, nausea… What could it be?
I get this every couple of months and to this day, I still cannot find out what it is.
Well, last night I startedvnot feeling well, almost like I was going to vomit. Then my stomach started gurgling and I felt like I had a lot of gas but it just wouldn’t come out. Then I had to go to the bathroom and a lot of gas came out as well as diarrhea. Then I had to run to the bathroom again shortly after, and then one more time and my stomach started to feel not as nauseous. So then I went to bed and woke up sweating but I didn’t have a fever (5 in the morning) I then woke up at 7 and had a loose stool again. Then I ate oatmeal and a banana. Now my stomach is a lot better but still feels odd. What could it be? This happens every several months and I’m always scared it’s going to happen while I’m somewhere like school.

Answer by Jessica
Talk to your doctor. You may have a food allergy; your doctor can send you to someone who can test for it. Meanwhile, keep a record of what you eat before one of these episodes (just write some notes down when you start feeling funny.)

There are some simple remedies you could try when you start not feeling well. Peppermint tea is great for gas. Just consider it medicine and choke a cup down. Candied ginger, ginger tea, or ginger ale is good for nausea. Coke syrup is great for settling your stomach. You can buy it in bottles from the drug store or just drink the soda.

I have a stomach issue…?

I have a stomach issue…?
I am a 24 year old female.

On Tuesday, January 24th 2012, I woke up with sulfur burps, and felt very nauseous. I vomited about 20 minutes later. The vomit was about every 15 minutes. I vomited a little bit of food, and the rest was water, afterwards it was just dry heaving. I also ended up getting very watery diarrhea. The vomiting lasted for about 2 hours, and the diarrhea was watery for about 4 days. After that, it turned into a soft stool. I still have diarrhea about once, every 36-48 hours but its not as watery. I also have soft stools ( Diarrhea is not constant ) . I am also constipated at times. 2 days ago I started having a little bit of heartburn. Since January 24th, I keep having a weird sensation in my stomach. It is not pain, it is just slight nausea, feeling of fullness/heaviness, and bloated. (can’t really explain the feeling ). That feeling is not constant throughout the day. What is this? Can a stomach bug or food poisoning leave some symptoms lingering for 2 weeks?

Just a few days before that incident, I started taking metamucil for extra fiber…and the night before I had a gyro that was not good.. ( was burned but cold, probably stayed out too long ) and then I had a shawarma.
I have stopped taking metamucil the day I started feeling ill.

Answer by Armageddon
Stop taking the tablets and seek medical advice as you could have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. this is a stress related condition and once you have it you have got it for life.
I have I. B. S. and I can go from diarrhoea to constipation in under 24 hours and there is always blood present in my motion. I am lucky though as my condition is not as bad as some peoples and I do not need medication.

“Can a stomach bug or food poisoning leave some symptoms lingering for 2 weeks?” Yes, if the source was an ecoli contamination. You may want to consider going to the ER for testing.

Get checked out at your doc’s just in case. They’ll most likely test a stool sample to make sure you don’t have a parasite. If so, they’ll prescribe you a pill to kill it. If it’s a stomach bug or food poisoning (which it most likely isn’t since it’s been going on for a few days) they will probably rehydrate you through an IV. Just listen to your body! You’ll be okay :)

Some history…
I’ve had 3 “attacks” of these weird sulfur burps in the past year. The sulfur burps are accompanied by watery diarrhea and vomiting and lasts for about a few hours, the next day I am fine. This is the only time it took this long to recover…or is this not even related to that?

Answer by Christine
You could be allergic to wheat gluten. Keep a diary of what you eat and when. Do you get the indigestion a few hours after eating pasta? Do a little research on the internet about gluten allergies, irritable bowel syndrome and gluten-free diets. (These diets are actually pretty good weight loss diets, too, since they eliminate all flour, pasta, pastries, bread and most grains. There are lists of these foods on the internet.

Something else you might try is food combining. The basic rule is to eat fruit by itself, and avoid eating meat with starchy vegetables and most grains. Starchy vegetables include potatoes, corn, and winter squash. Eat fruit at least two hours after other meals, to give the former food time to digest first; eat fruit at least one hour before eating another meal, for the same reason. Meat takes the longest to digest (4 hours at least), and requires the highest acid level in the stomach to break down the amino acids. Unfortunately everything else in the stomach has to stay there until the meat is digested, so it tends to ferment and produce gas and bloating. Experiment with the food combining idea and see what happens. You might enjoy reading Sherry Brescia’s book Great Taste No Pain.

Onions are a food with a lot of sulphur in it. It could be that you are allergic to onions, and that’s why you get the sulphur taste. Again, keep a log and maybe even be daring enough to test it out on yourself one food at a time.

Do i have a mild case of Stomach Flu?
Hello..

Everyone in my house has been coming down with Gastroenteritis, about 2 days apart from each other.
Well out of the 6 people in my home, I was the only one who hadn’t gotten it, probably because im a health freak and clean everything with bleach.

Well, yesterday i came down with bad stomach pains,
Light Nausea and watery diarrhea, But i didn’t vomit..not once.

The Diarrhea continued on today, and so did the stomach pains, but for some reason, i havent thrown up.
Is there a reason to this?..

Are these symptoms of stomach flu?

Are these symptoms of stomach flu?
I’ve felt symptoms about three to four days ago. It first started with stomach pain and nausea. Then the diarrhea started. For the first two days, it was only once a day of using the bathroom, but later on, it became three days to almost every hour of having watery diarrhea attacks. I haven’t had vomiting, and I can take foods and waters down; however, after all the diarrhea, it’s hard for me to replace all the water I’ve lost.

Is it accurate to say that I have stomach flu, or is it something more serious? The only thing troubling me is the constant diarrhea attacks.

Answer by Breeze
It could be, usually with stomach flu’s you get vomiting. Another possibility is food poisoning. Take fiber and see a doctor.

I’m getting frequent and random stomach aches. Need options, opinions! HELP =(?

I’m getting frequent and random stomach aches. Need options, opinions! HELP =(?
As the question says, I’m always getting stomach aches.

It’s mostly at night, right around the time that I go to sleep. For a while I thought it was psychological, and still sometimes do because nothing ever really happens. (Meaning I never throw up or anything, I just feel crappy). But I should have no problem with going to sleep, I don’t get nightmares, and I sleep soundly.. everything is fine as soon as I actually fall asleep.

Anyway, besides the consistent night time, I get them all other times of the day off and on.. after I eat, before I eat, when I’m hungry, when I’m not.. Whenever; there is no specific time. They come on so sporadically that its hard to predict or pin a cause to. The other day I was in a book store with a friend and it came out of no where. I felt like I needed to sit down right away or I would just fall over. I don’t feel fatigued though.. Or like dizzy or anything else.. Its just a stomach pain. Another time was the other day I was writing an essay for one of my classes, I had just had a bowl of soup and everything was fine (I try to eat light). Then I took just a few sips of sparkling cider, which normally agrees fine with me, and it came on just like that.. Literally seconds after drinking the cider.

I do have high anxiety and find that when I’m stressed they get worse. But sometimes they come on when I have absolutely NOTHING to worry about!

In the beginning of November I caught some bug.. I’m not sure if it was the stomach flu because I only threw up twice and I think that was because of the Tamiflu (h1n1 prevention) the doctor gave me.. I took it on an empty stomach. I felt sick for 2 days, felt fine for 2 days, and felt sick again for 3 more days. It was very strange, no other symptoms besides being tired and feeling sick to my stomach. But sometimes I feel like this bug just never went away!

What on earth could this be? I keep asking my mom to see a doctor but she just says there is nothing wrong with me and its all in my head. Sometimes I believe her because I do seem to give them to myself at times. But other times I think its not just in my head because they will come on without me thinking about anything stressful or thinking of stomach pain at all. So maybe a therapist would be better? honestly, I’ll try anything now. It really effects my quality of life because I frequently decline invites to places for feeling sick or even the fear of getting sick. I’m becoming so afraid of everything, any foods that I eat I worry that they’ll give me a stomach ache (sometimes they do, so it’s a legit worry). I barely eat anymore for this reason, which has caused me to drop nearly 15 pounds in the past month or so, and I was already not overweight. I used to love meat and now I have trouble eating it. I get really easily grossed out by food, sometimes the sight or smell of it just makes me feel sick. Its ridiculous but I just cant help myself. Going to school I get them a lot (Thankfully its Christmas vacation now so I can have some time to work on this..) but once I get to school I usually feel fine, which makes me think its got more to do with my life than that there is really something wrong.. Idk? T_T

Anyway, my symptoms are:
- Nausea, but no vomiting
- Gas and constipation (ALOT), occasional diarrhea
- Bloating (It feels like I always have to hold my stomach in because otherwise the pressure of it just sitting normally hurts.)
- I always feel like I need to either have a BM, pass gas or burp, but I never do/can.

I can rule out pregnancy, I’m not sexually active so that is definitely not what’s wrong.
I don’t think that it is my diet either because it has so little to do with food it seems.
I get enough sleep and I treat myself pretty well I think.. I do a lot of relaxing activities and I fall asleep to calming music sometimes at night.. Read.. Drink tea.. I’m like a boring little old lady. But its because of this dang problem!

One thing I should make note of I guess.. Is that I was on prednisone from February to July for a serious eye condition. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but if it did then why would my symptoms show up 4 months later?

Oh, and I also got extensive blood work done and a chest x-ray maybe 2 weeks ago for the same eye disease, so I think anything that was to be found would have been found in those tests, right?

I so hope that someone has some answers for me. I just don’t know what to do with myself anymore.. I’m so sick of feeling sick! Sorry to write so much, I just wanted to be thorough. Thanks for reading!!

i have similar problem. first thing gas x . after u eat. cider affects me too. cut out beef. and dairy. i bet it will get better in time. if u take gas x and it doesn’t work gas x is not bad for u. try and eat small meals. that yogurt stuff threes always advertising. hope u feel better. frickin stomach effects your whole sense of being. i know.. relax best therapy take care

Answer by KStarz
I think you should go to a doctor anyways. Even if it is just in your head. But stomach cramps, and being bloated can have some serious risks on your health. Stomach pains aren’t something you just want to ignore. You might have IBS, but I doubt it. I would go see a gestural doctor and request that you get some tests done on your stomach, intestines, and your colon. Make sure that there’s nothing seriously wrong before you go thinking that it’s all in your head. Hope this helps you. And hope ya feel better. :]

Having odd stomach illness symptoms?

Having odd stomach illness symptoms?
I’m a 16 year old male. It started about a week ago, I was on vacation with my family and we went out to eat. Later that night, about 3 or 4 hours after I got home I started feeling VERY nauseous and sick to my stomach. I went to bed and was fine until about 2 days later. I couldn’t eat without feeling cruddy, just general malaise and fatigue. I could hear my stomach growling and gurgling but no pain, diarrhea or vomiting. Ever since I can’t eat without feeling cruddy. I feel fine UNTIL I eat. These past couple days It’s evolved to where I feel fine until I eat, no nausea but I get an upset stomach and diarrhea, fatigue has levelled out. This is where it gets frightening. Lately almost all the time I have a dull ache in my upper left abdomen area, very local but it spreads to my back. I also have similar pain on my right side, but not always. Also upper central abdominal pain. The upset stomachs happen incrementally, 1-3 hours after eating only, and usually relieved by bowel movements, if they don’t go away on their own. I felt perfectly fine before the vacation and absolutely nothing was out of the ordinary. No pain or anything at all. Suddenly I feel this way. I don’t think it’s anything serious or something of the sort as it was very sudden, however I will try to get a doctor’s appointment ASAP, I just want some opinions before hand. Is it viral or something more serious?

Sounds viral to me.

Answer by Lisa
If you have the stomach virus then you would sometimes vomit. Try resting and have plenty of fluids, but if things don’t get better by monday then you should really try going back to the doctor.

Don’t eat heavy things either if you can’t hold it down, soup should be a nice thing with fruit. Maybe lay off the coffee until you’re feeling better.

Stomach cramping, fatigue, help!?

Stomach cramping, fatigue, help!?
I have severe stomach cramping, nausea, fatigue, and achiness. Whenever I eat, I feel full all day until I get nauseated again about 5 hours later, when I have to eat again. The cramping is normally just a feeling of pressure but frequently it will spike and feel like someone is stabbing me. I had what seemed like stomach flu symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea saturday, but that was only a 24 hour period now I am left with this. Any ideas? Should I just go to the doctor?

Answer by The_Answer
You’re okay. The reason why you’re so gassy(full feeling/pressure) is because the bacteria in your intestines overproduced during your stomach flu and as a side effect produced a LOT of gas.

Try taking a Gas-X to relieve some of the pressure. If it’s still there by Saturday, I would see a doctor…but i think you’ll be fine.

Answer by anchit
Yes u need to see a doc.although u might be suffering from just simple gastroenteritis due to consumption of contaminated food(which brought nausea and vomiting) it could also be a long standing chronic problem(u have not mentioned the duration of ur troubles) like gastric ulcer.if its been there since saturday then we need to rule out apppendicitis(pain aroung umbilicus associated with nausea, vomiting and fever radiating rightwards) although a simple stomach inf is more propable.
If u wanna avoid doc,my advise is to avoid spicy food esp at unhygienic places, take some antacids to bring relief, frink milk before bed time(helps in acidity).u can try antibiotics like Norfloxacin 400mg twice a day(rf to ur country’s brand name) for 4 days along with metronidazole 400 mg twice a day(look for combination of both drugs in a singl tablet).
